April 28th 2026

If you’ve seen the name and want to know more, this is a good place to start. I’m Maurice Brown. I’m running for New York State Assembly to fight for working people, lower costs, and make sure Syracuse families can actually afford to live here. But beyond the campaign, here’s a little more about me. These are a mix of questions I’ve been asked in person, on social media, via email, through friends etc.

The Basics

What does Maurice Brown do?

Whether directly working on a Political Campaign, or working for a the New York Working Families Party, I work to identify and recruit candidates, train them to run effective campaigns, build volunteer and voter outreach programs, and helps coordinate the strategy needed to win elections and pass real policy.

As a County Legislator, I work on budget, policy decisions, and local issues that directly impact residents. His role includes reviewing spending, shaping policy, and helping ensure county government is responsive to the needs of the community.

What experience does Maurice Brown have in local politics?

I currently serve as Chair of the Ways and Means Committee on the Onondaga County Legislature, where I play a key role in budget oversight and financial decision making. I also serve on the Planning committee, and have served on Environmental Protection and Facilities Committees. I also held several roles on winning political campaigns helping amazing candidates like Mary Kuhn and Anna Kelles get elected to local and state offices. I am also a founding member of Uplift Syracuse, a progressive advocacy group focused on getting progressive policy advanced through legislation.

What office is Maurice Brown running for?

I am running for New York State Assembly to represent the 129th District, which includes parts of Syracuse, Geddes, and Van Buren. I’m running against 28 year incumbent Bill Magnarelli, a longtime Syracuse Politician who has served in the public office since his election to City Council in 1995. The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature. Assemblymembers introduce and vote on laws, shape the state budget, and make decisions that impact housing, education, healthcare, and the overall cost of living.

The Story

How did Maurice Brown get into politics?

I got into politics in 2015 after learning about United States Senator Bernie Sanders and his presidential campaign. I began organizing locally with Syracuse for Sanders and was later selected as a National Delegate to the campaign. That experience showed me what grassroots organizing could accomplish and pushed me to stay involved in public service.

Did Maurice Brown always want to run for office?

No. I originally wanted to be a Professional Athlete until I played College Football at SUNY Brockport in 2011. After realizing I was too small, I then turned to wanting to become a sports writer like Michael Wilbon on ESPN. There was also a spell where I wanted to be a Stand-Up Comedian. It wasn’t until Bernie’s presidential campaign and his subsequent call for his call for his supporters to run for office that Maurice considered running for local office.

How old is Maurice Brown?

Maurice Brown was born on May 5th 1992, he will be 34 years old on election day.

What life experiences shaped Maurice’s views?

My views come from my lived experience growing up and my time serving as a soldier. I have experienced what it is like when things are uncertain, and I have also seen what it looks like when housing, healthcare, and education are taken care of. That difference stayed with me and continues to shape how I approach this work.

What motivated Maurice Brown to stay involved in politics?

In 2019, after helping elect State Senator Rachel May, I saw what government could accomplish in a single session. Reproductive healthcare was codified into law, bail reform was passed, tenant protections were strengthened, climate action moved forward, and steps were taken to reduce the influence of big money in politics. Seeing that level of progress showed me the potential of government to meaningfully improve people’s lives and motivated me to stay involved.
